Woodmy and His Family Give Hope to People with Disabilities in Haiti

Five-year-old Woodmy’s life has been an illustration of the gospel to his community in Neply, Haiti. Part of TTF’s Orphan Care + Prevention family through our partner myLIFEspeaks, Woodmy has overcome many obstacles while living with disabilities. His story is proof that what seems to be impossible with man, is possible to God.

Woodmy was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that causes stiffness and rigidity in his muscles and joints. Because of that, his mobility looks different than most kids. Although the VouDou influence in Haiti has taught many to believe that kids like Woodmy are cursed or possessed, this sweet boy has thankfully been spared from this kind of community.

When Woodmy first arrived at myLIFEspeaks, he was celebrated and loved for exactly who he is, just as God made him be. He had surgery a few years ago and currently is receiving therapy designed to increase his mobility. Woodmy is thriving in kindergarten. 

However, his life isn’t the only one that’s been impacted by myLIFEspeaks.

When his mom, Cindy, was involved in a motorcycle accident years ago, the staff at myLIFEspeaks helped her get treatment. Without their intervention, would never have received the medical care that she desperately needed. 

During this time, Cindy also learned how to love and care for people with special needs through her interactions with myLIFEspeaks–how to see them as worthy of love and value, just as God sees them. This prepared her heart to better care for Woodmy. She also became a part of a support group that empowers parents of children with special needs. Both myLIFEspeaks and this community support group have been huge advocates for Woodmy and serve as examples of what it looks like to love people with disabilities in Haiti.
